Module 3 | Going Beyond
Next Steps
If you haven’t done so already, here are the next steps you can take to get ahead!
1. Set up online banking 💻
There are lots of banks to choose from to open an online bank account if you haven’t already. There’s BNZ,
ANZ, ASB, and Westpac, just to name a few. In this digital age, an online bank account makes things incredibly
convenient, because it lets you buy things online and without having to use cash.
Once you’ve signed up for online banking, make sure that you have two accounts:
1. A checking account lets you access your money for your everyday needs. Any income
should be deposited here first, and your debit card will be linked to this account too.
2. A savings account are for setting aside money to save up for longer-term goals. Most
banks offer an interest rate on these accounts, meaning that the more money you have in that account, the
more interest you’ll earn. Some may have fees if you withdraw from these accounts more than once a month.
Always check with your bank’s terms and conditions.
2. Set up an IRD account 🧾
When going through the paperwork of your first job contract, you’ll need to apply for an IRD
number, which will then let you set up an online IRD account called ‘My IR’, which will help you keep track of
the tax you pay to the government.
Setting one up is simple, and all you need to do is follow the steps on the IRD website.

It’s really useful to have as it lets you open a bank account or apply for a student loan.

some further reading on your own.
